Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), or "tapping," is a self-help mind-body practice that combines cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and acupressure.
How It Works
EFT involves tapping your fingertips on specific meridian points on the face and upper body while focusing on a phrase, such as "I love myself completely" to calm the nervous system.
Step-by-Step Tapping Guide
- Affirmation: Choose a specific topic (e.g., love, peace, or healing).
- Rate the Intensity: Measure how strongly you feel the emotion on a scale from 0 to 10.
- The Setup Statement: Tap repeatedly on the edge of your palm (Karate Chop point) while saying an acceptance statement out loud three times:
- "Even though I have this [anxiety/stress], I love myself completely."
- The Tapping Sequence: Tap 4 times on each of the following points in order, repeating a short phrase at each point:
- Side of Hand (Karate Chop point)
- Top of Head (Crown of the head)
- Beginning of Eyebrow (Inner edge)
- Side of Eye (Bony ridge by the outer corner)
- Under Eye (Bony ridge under the pupil)
- Under Nose (Between nose and upper lip)
- Chin (Between lower lip and chin crease)
- Collarbone (Notch just below the inside edge of the collarbone)
- Under Arm (About 4 inches below the armpit)
- Re-evaluate: Pause, take a deep breath, and check your intensity score on the 0 to 10 scale. Repeat the round if necessary until the intensity drops.
